Matthew has been teaching piano since 2005. He has taught students of all ages, from beginner to advanced. Matthew has taught in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador. He currently teaches about thirty students from his home based music studio. Matthew believes in the importance of scales, theory and reading music. He also believes in the importance of improvisation and playing by ear. Matthew tries to approach teaching in a fun and interactive way by teaching students music that they are interested in and by teaching them how to make it their own. Music is one of the only languages that is often taught backwards. We are generally taught to read it before we can speak it.

 

Most recently Matthew has been nominated for the MuscNL Music Educator of the year award two years in a row (2015 and 2016).
